Unclogging a blocked drain is never fun, but neither is wading in a dirty pool of water in your home. You can always call the plumber to drain the clog, and if you're willing to pay for a possibly costly fee. Or else, with a bit of industry, you can do the unclogging yourself.

Here are some simple DIY tips to clear blocked drain.

• If the clog is in a basin or tub drainage, cover the overflow opening with a wet rug. Is it one of the basins of a side by side two? In that case, plug the wet rag on the other basin's opening. If you're trying to fix a bathroom drain and there's another bathroom back to back in neighboring rooms, they're probably connected to the same drainage. Block the drainage and overflow vent in the other bathroom. Other overflow vents and drains in adjacent basins or bathrooms should be plugged with wet rags.


• Rag plugging didn't work? Use a plunger to unclog the pipe. Fill the basin or tub with water level that covers the head of the plunger. Seal the plunger better to the opening by applying petroleum jelly. Pump the plunger up and down rapidly.
  
  The water should be moving in and out of the drain, gradually building up force that can dislodge the object clogging the pipe. Pump the plunger about a dozen times and then jerk it up quickly. The water is supposed to rush out if the drain has been unclogged. Or else, do the same procedure two or three times if the drain is still blocked.


• If a plunger could not unclog the drain, try using a chemical drain opener. But be wary because caustic agents in the chemical can harm some fixtures in the drainage. Instead, you can use a drain and trap auger. Uncap the drain opening by removing the strainer or pop up stopper. Insert the auger wire into the drain opening. Crank the handle of the auger wire and then loosen and tighten the thumbscrew on the lever. Advance the wire, and if it touches a blocking object, move the auger wire back and forth while turning the handle. While turning the handle, withdraw the auger. The clog should be removed and the drainage unclogged.

Unclogging drains in basins and tubs are easier than unblocking floor drains and main drain pipes. If these DIY tips don't work, it's time to call the plumber.
