DIY Tips to Prevent Blocked Drains

DIY Tips to Prevent Blocked Drains
Most of us do not maintain our drains on a regular basis. It is only when the drains clog up that we realize our folly. Clogged drains are the breeding grounds for germs and therefore lead to illnesses of many types. To avoid this, the drains must be taken care of regularly. Big cities face huge drainage problems due to huge population and settlements. Some of these problems can be sorted out at home itself using simple tools and techniques.

Listed below are a few points and tips
to help you maintain your drains well:

  1. Do not throw anything and everything in to the drain

It is important to fit strainers such that big particles are sifted there itself. In the absence of a strainer these debris pass through and over a period of time clog the drains up. So if you do not wish to deal with the blocked drains, you have to nip the problem in the bud itself.

  2. Hot water to dissolve debris

Another simple way to maintain your drains would be to take boiling water and pour it down your kitchen sink or other places linked to your drainage. This helps in melting and dissolving certain types of garbage and even food particles. This is a very simple method and you can do it as often as you like. But make sure the water is clear as tea water or coffee brew and the likes can actually cause more harm. The water used for the purpose should be clear, transparent boiling water.

  3. Use lemon juice

Lemon juice down the sink can help a great deal. This helps in eliminating any odour build up. This too is a very simple method as lemon is something every household would have and it is extremely inexpensive. Always use only the juice which has been freshly squeezed and seeds removed or lemon juice from the market. Seeds and lemon rind would further clog the drains, so one must be careful of that.

  4. Notice the early signs of clogging

It is very easy to notice the early signs of clogging. You will notice that the water will start passing through the drains at a very slow rate or at times it comes back with a jerk and thereafter slowly sinks. If you notice this, immediately pour some salt water, vinegar or even baking soda down the drain. The salt water should be hot and not at room temperature, as hot water dissolves impurities much faster than cold water. This can act as a quick fix for the problem and prevent the clogging from becoming too intense. Also you put a stick through the pipe and flip it back and forth. This will shift the debris for a free flow of water.

These are mere quick fixes to bail you out of the problem. If the problem still persists, you should contact a professional immediately. As it may not be a simple issue but something on a larger scale.
